how many years should one desire a specific tattoo in a specific location before acting on it?

That's disturbing. That's exactly what I was going to say.

well i wanted my ankh for almost 6 years before i got it, but again, i had to wait till after i was old enough to go by myself...the one on my back jen and i decided on within a couple of weeks...and my sword i wanted since i got my ankh...and i got the sword about 8 moths after my ankh...currently the tattoo i still want i have been wanting for about 5 years...but since its so big its expensive...
i guess it depends on the person...after all its something you have to live with for the rest of your life...
lol sorry to ramble! i miss you! hugs!

I suppose if its possible to gauge how often your taste and style changes, use that as a guideline and try to reevaluate your desire after one full taste cycle ;)

I've been waffling on it for at least seven years. It may be time.

It doesn't depend on how long the wait is.
It depends on whether or not the person knows that they will be happy with that for the rest of their lives.
That knowledge comes slower to some people than others.
When you know you're not going to regret it, then that's the time.

This is the third time this has come up with other people... today.
My mom said 3. Everyone I talked to today said 3. I waited 3 as per mom's rule. But you know what I learned?
No matter how much you like a tattoo design for no matter how long, unless you have a way to wear that design temporarily every day for 3 years, you never actually know how much you'll like it attached to your skin.
People ask me what the Chinese symbol (my completely made up design) on my chest says all the time, and I'm fucking sick of it. I want to take a cheese grater to it so badly. I didn't anticipate that when I was a kid. Of course, I never ever wore revealing clothes then, either.
As for location. It doesn't matter. Do you want to show it off easily? Do you want to be able to see it yourself all the time? The one on the back of my neck is my favourite, but I never get to see it. Sometimes I forget it's there.

as long as the desire exists and the tattoo does not.
I've wanted the same tattoo in the same place for several years. It has not happened yet.... but it will because the desire exists.
